Open?

Hi there,

I was wondering about the word "open" in openSkyMap.
Is it only open about its data or is it fully open - even for open source developers to join?

It would be great if at least the source code of the recently released raspi feeder would be opened up.

Hi Malte,

so far "open" mostly referred to the data and the API. Anyway, we are happy to see that there are motivated programmers with interest in our project and since we are a very small team (just about 8 researchers) we will do our best to open up our development processes.

As you will understand, the back-end an core infrastructure cannot be opened up to the public easily but everything else should work somehow. We already discussed it a bit and thought of something like a docker image running a more or less fully functional OpenSky web front-end which allows people to develop "apps" locally which could also be deployed in the production website. Any comments and ideas are very welcome!

Concerning the feeder: It wasn't planned but I will discuss publishing the code of the feeder with the responsible developer.

First of all I'd like to congratulate the team for taking the initiative to build this amazing project, you have overdelivered!

I recently joined the project, am an aviation enthusiast, host multiple ads-b trackers in Greece and feed to different platforms. I am very excited to discover an open platform for my hobby, and being a developer myself, I'm looking forward to contribute in the development of the project.

I also believe that opening up more parts of the project (e.g. website backend/frontend, dump1090 feeder) will greatly accelerate the progress of new features development & bug fixes.

I understand that the original idea of the project was to gather the data and offer them for research projects, and I think that now that a community starts to form and there is momentum, the team needs to consider if they want to expand the purposes of the project and become an open flight tracking platform, which the world lacks so far.

Dan.
