Set default location for Opensky Explorer

6 years 10 months ago #329 by stkm2017
I started feeding into the OpenSky network about 2 weeks ago and I really love it!

I use the OpenSky Explorer to see all flights (in my area). However, when I fire up the Explorer the map is centered somewhere over south east France. It would be great if the Explorer map could center over the current position of the user (provided "get location" privileges are granted in the browser) or if a default location could be set and saved (e.g. in a cookie).

Currently I use my own page where I have included the map via iframe and set my current location via some javascript "magic". However, I think the current user location should be the default.

Thanks!

Hey stkm2017,

the last position you looked at in the OpenSky Explorer is automatically saved as a cookie. If you set your browser up to frequently delete cookies the position is lost each time.

You can already use GET parameters to specify a custom location like so:

- c: comma separated latitude and logitude.
- z: Google Maps zoom level

Example:
opensky-network.org/network/explorer?c=4...5.39345386030277&z=9

You could create a bookmark which includes the desired position.

Best,
Marco
