How do we know the departure and arrival airports? was created by Peter97

Hello!

I was wondering how places like FR24, RB24 or OpenSky infer what the origin and destination of an airplane is.

Later I got really curious and tried to use Xoolive's Traffic to infer it but I ended up surrendering.

Now, seriously, how do they do it?

Well, it is easy if .takeoff_airport() is used on a traffic.Core.Flight. But it is a probabilistic guess. Is this how it works with OSN and other sites?

I don't know about the others, but we are fairly transparent.

You would need to check our FAQ though... opensky-network.org/about/faq#q14

Other sites may be joining different datasets beyond ADS-B data.
